1937 APRIL - Clacton-on-Sea, Essex East-Anglia … we live in a little 17th century homestead with a Victorian front added 1870s, next the Labour Club, in the middle of the Old Road coming down from Great Clacton, Clactuna in Doomsday Survey.
We bought it for 70 English pounds then my father & a friend restored it - then we gave the old couple in the town Retirement Home another 70 pounds for we are so pleased & we take them out once a month on Sundays or Saturdays … This old little house with history will be turned into a TOWN MUSEUM when we move to another interesting house … we can afford to use our decently earned moneys on saving interesting buildings with local history attached & giving them life again …

My father FJR knows where they stay & will call later that evening & talk with them - like MALRAUX who com`th July 1937 for the summer, my father also talks good naturedly with everyone … taking an interest in them as human beings … ANDRE MALRAUX talks to people like my father FJR does, & with that same genuine kindness towards all human beings … HUMANITAS is still a useful Latin word …
We bid them have a nice tea … we must back to our ancient sweet little Old Road home … & we have borrowed a sand pail from one of their children for some shrimps for our tea … I have a feeling of happiness but am used to having interruptions from `MONSTERS of the DEEP` as my great-aunt with long black hair Welsh-Irish hair, Miss Annie Agnes Carroll Williams, calls them on the SEAFRONT in their GRAND … she learned marble cutting from 17 years in Liverpool with Professor Manzoni, then they went to help Harold Rathbone at his Della Robbia pottery Birkenhead ( Williamson Art Gallery Liverpool ) for awhile … Annie is good at remembering The Ingoldsby Legend poems … they are full of humour with good reminders not to be wicked …
