They have seen us come & go from this beach in the daytimes & heard us talk of the Calls we make two of us at a time so her father can speak without too much effort & enjoy the visit - I cannot remember what he did before he retired but ANDRE goes & talks away with him & comes back very pleased with what he has learned...

I see him, Unity`s grandpa, often in deep winter when we call an hour & he is in an armchair by a warm coal fire with a book & my father sits awhile & speaks about literature & gardens - & I think technology perhaps... Sometimes my father returns later evening with Stella-stars when she comes from PARIS ... & two or three friends... she is an Artist ...I hear that Roger Fry has not pleased them on black art & UG ! how sad - when Dora shot herself ...it was probably the DOPE too ...

I love the town in winter - a fierce sea then the lull, the trickling sounds of the waves about the Pier & the groynes ... 1950s - I heard at sometime that JIM/now CUR JAMES/is a drinking CHUM of my mother before the WAR - but it had no meaning as I HAD NO BEFORE THE WAR MEMORIES !

... & 1957 , he is a boozing nasty CROOK in a BIG CLUB - inviting my mother into WHITES his PRIVATE OFFICE ! HE IS SCARY !

& 1958 - I learn that he is ROBBING this Catholic household of ANDRE MALRAUX - but calls CLARA MALRAUX into WHITES for drinks & goes to PARIS to see Messalina ...

1957 Oct - JIM also came to order me out of the room I pay for - & then poisoned some oranges & a pear with a syringe - the dark brown marks inside the fruit showed what he had done ! I did NOT leave !

The young staff in the Household appeared to be polite about JIM - gradually over two years I came to know some matters very disturbing were connected to them - & felt THAT SOME OF THE STAFF WERE FRIGHTENED of JIM too -

1953 the man JIM in Whites Bar was very fat & given to bad tempers & threats - he ran blackmail/prostitution/gambling/DRUG SALES/other crimes... & IT WAS KNOWN ALL ABOUT THE TOWN THAT THE POLICE COULD NOT TOUCH HIM - because of where he DRANK ! & he had an apartment at the back of the Palace since 1923 !

Like many young people, from time to time, I came to hear more & more about the Adventures of dirty JIMMY ...

MY GRANDPARENTS RANSOM did not exist !

I HAD NO PHOTOGRAPHS ... & my father never sent me a letter from abroad !

I heard 1950s that JIM had an apartment back of Buckingham Palace from 1923/ I had NO MEMORY of Mr PONG pre-War - he a little nasty IMP who kidnapped me several times ! He was MAD !
